CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Chase gripped Emma’s upper arms and pushed back. She stared at him, breathing hard. Then he pulled her in again, harder, and her breath left her yet again as his mouth closed over hers. It was so right and had been so long…

From somewhere far away, she heard a voice knifing at the edges of her consciousness. It sounded familiar. Amplified. Alarming. She became aware of a sense of space around the two of them that hadn’t been there before. She opened her eyes. People were moving away, spreading into the corners of the dance floor. Smiling people.

Chase now, too, seemed to be aware of it. He drew back, looking around them. From the stage, a female voice was saying something about love stories. In an odd accent.

Noooooo. Emma turned toward the band’s corner. There, with a guitar strapped around her and a red-and-white checked dress straight out of the fifties, was Madame Claire, silver hair and all. “Is it not a love song we need?” she asked the Gil’s patrons. When they looked at each other, murmuring questions, she demanded, “Is it not?”

Lots of answering nods then and rumbles of assent, with hands risen to clap but not quite achieving it. Confused and half drunk as the Gil’s crowd might be, they were polite.

Chase looked at Emma, at the stage, and back at Emma, questions in his eyes.

“These two people,” Madame Claire gestured at Chase and Emma, “they are perfect for the other.”

Emma’s heart sank. This could not be going anywhere good.

“Who is that?” Chase asked.

“My hair stylist.”

“Your what?”

And then Madame Claire began singing “Stand by Your Man,” her voice way too high. Sometimes hard it is to be a woe-men, she warbled. Emma cringed.

The band dutifully took up the appropriate musical accompaniment, a good thing since Madame Claire’s strum of the guitar had nothing to do with the melody.

Emma wanted to shake her, pull her off the stage and demand to know what she thought she was doing, but at the same time, she couldn’t help feeling grateful that the woe-man was trying so hard to help. And doing such a bang-up bad job of it.

People continued to stare at her and Chase, smiles wreathing their faces, even as they looked in confusion at Madame Claire, who dreamily sang, But if it is you love him, it is you’ll forgive him with as much conviction as if she were a semi-southern Yoda, onstage at the Ryman. In a red-and-white-checked dress and leopard-print heels.

“Seriously. Your hair stylist thinks this is a love song.”

“You’ve seen my bangs.” She stopped herself just short of adding, and my do-over.

“Right.”

Madame Claire finished her song and took an awkward bow to the smatterings of applause. She had just stepped back to the microphone when the band took over, pounding out the opening of a Blake Shelton song. Madame Claire valiantly joined in with her one-note strum as someone with the band discreetly moved the mic away from her.

People surged back onto the dance floor.
